PERSONALITY:
Damon is incredibly easy to read: he's the definition of a shallow prick. He's a jerk with no sense of personal space, shame, or anything remotely close to being a human. He enjoys riling people up because he's somehow blessed with the ability of knowing exactly what to do or what to say to piss people off - an advantage he uses for his pleasure. (It doesn't help that most people allow him to get under their skin.)
As a vampire, Damon has no issues using mind control to manipulate people; for him, it's as easy and as natural as breathing. He probably doesn't care all that much for anyone. The little voice in his head that would usually tell him to feel guilty has long since been assassinated. Damon hasn't felt anything real for anyone in decades.
In saying that, though, Damon has a good heart underneath all that chaotic evil. It's been a little warped and twisted for sure, showing his version of love in rather unconventional ways, but Damon could quite literally give the world up for one person. He doesn't trust or love easy because he has faced incredibly betrayal in his past before - such emotions were hard to let go of especially considering his never-aging, never-moving-forward state - but once he does, he will do anything and everything for them.

It all started when he was twenty-five in 1864, with some evil bitch named Katherine Pierce, and a bit of an unhealthy obsession and unconventional methods in bed. Look, Damon doesn't like to talk about it much with just any random stranger, because that was one of the stupidest decisions he could have ever made. He should have known the bitch was just playing, but what could he say? He'd thought he'd been in love with her.
Anyway, he doesn't like to talk about that. Let the past be the past and all that sappy crap that people say to make themselves feel better. Damon himself certainly hasn't forgotten - if he ever saw Katherine Pierce again, he would make her pay for everything he'd endured since then. (Sure, he could say that now, but he had a funny inkling that would all be shot to hell if she ever tried anything with him again. No Damon, be strong.)
Since then, he has traipsed all across the world - yes to look for her, but that is a moot point - and he has enjoyed himself immensely. Nothing cures a broken heart like a hunt, after all, and especially with the mind manipulation thing that he could control as easily as his own limbs, well, people were right to fear him. Add that the fact that he'd been walking around with no emotions on for the last few decades - even most of his own kind didn't particularly like him.
Not that he minded, really. Damon is used to being his own person, working by himself and all that; he did after all try to free Katherine Pierce using only his own genius.
But Damon is back in Mystic Falls after a stint away from the town when Elena chose Stefan. The double echo of having a girl that looked exactly the same, choose his brother in the exact same way, was a bit too unbearable for him. There was too much deja vu going on there and he couldn't take it. Yes his pride, but also just inside, it felt rotten and cold and everything he should have been in the first place.
No matter, Damon has returned with no emotions on again - let's see just what fun he'll be having in Mystic Falls.
